Camelllia in Jungle Gardens on Avery Island.
Years ago Edmund and I drove to Turkey Triot, Louisiana to buy three Camellia Japonica Alba Plena bushes, which we planted in our yard because Virginia McIlhenny loved them so. They are one of the oldest camellias in cultivation, dating back to 1797, and we are so happy to have them blooming in our yard today..
This is a Camellia Japonica Dr. Tinsley. Per the American Camellia Society, "This C. japonica seedling of unknown paretage first bloomed in 1944. It was thought to have come from McIlhenny's Jungle Gardens, propagated by Henderson's Nursery of Lafayette, Louisiana and named and registered by Mrs. G. J. Tinsley, of Hammond, Louisiana." We have these beautiful flowers blooming in our yard on Avery Island.
