Avery Island Wildlife

This gallery shows the wildlife we have photographed on Avery Island, Louisiana, which is one of five salt domes rising above the flat Louisiana coastal wetlands. The various species are shown in alphabetical order.
Avery Island is also the home of TABASCO Brand Pepper Sauce. More information on Avery Island is available at http://www.TABASCO.com, and http://www.Twitter.com/A_Island.
Warmest regards, Pam and Edmund McIlhenny

This is a Great Horned Owl, also known as a "hoot owl" or a "tiger owl." It is the most common owl in the Americas. They prey on rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, falcons, other owls--and they may be the only animal with an appetite for skunks, according to National Geographic. They are difficult to photograph because they are so nocturnal, and I was thrilled to get this shot.

"Who Cooks for You" hoots this Avery Island Barred Owl. These owls don't migrate, and don't even travel far, but they will move to another part of their territory if a Great Horned Owl, their most danagerous predator, shows up. Barred Owl fossils dating back to the Pleistocene age 11,000 yeras ago have been found in Florida and Tennesee. Another interesting fact: a young Barred Owl can climb a tree by grabbing the bark with its beak and talons, and then flapping its wings. Source: Cornell All About Birds.
