Avery Island Wildlife

This gallery shows the wildlife we have photographed on Avery Island, Louisiana, which is one of five salt domes rising above the flat Louisiana coastal wetlands. The various species are shown in alphabetical order.
Avery Island is also the home of TABASCO Brand Pepper Sauce. More information on Avery Island is available at http://www.TABASCO.com, and http://www.Twitter.com/A_Island.
Warmest regards, Pam and Edmund McIlhenny

    Tricolored Heron.
The Eastern Wild Turkey is the same species the Puritans encountered back in the seventeenth century. Turkeys have very sharp eyesight and hearing, can RUN 15 to 18 miles per hour, and can fly up to 55 miles per hour, according to the Indiana Division of Fish and Wildlife. While this gobbler's head would normally be all red, it turned to white and blue during the breeding season.
This Eastern Wild Turkey gobbler shows the typical copper iridescent chest feathers, the beard dropping from his chest area, and the chestnut brown and black tail feathers fanned out "in strut." Edmund is quite adept at using his turkey call to encourage the gobblers to strut, though we later learned, by accident, that slamming the car door worked almost as well.
