Avery Island Wildlife

This gallery shows the wildlife we have photographed on Avery Island, Louisiana, which is one of five salt domes rising above the flat Louisiana coastal wetlands. The various species are shown in alphabetical order.
Avery Island is also the home of TABASCO Brand Pepper Sauce. More information on Avery Island is available at http://www.TABASCO.com, and http://www.Twitter.com/A_Island.
Warmest regards, Pam and Edmund McIlhenny

Osprey looking out over the Jungle Gardens lagoons and Bayou Petit Anse.
This is the first time we have photographed an Osprey on Avery Island.
North American River Otters were once hunted aggressively for their pelts--in 1800, 65,000 pelts were harvested in the United States. By 1900, they were extinct in 21 states and 1 Canadian province. Subsequently, otters were successfully reintroduced in those areas, and Louisiana provided more otters for this repopulation effort than any other state. Today their populations have recovered. One surprising fact is how fast otters can travel over land. They must live close to water, yet they can reach speeds of up to 18 miles per hour when traveling over land.
